7-06 Ambon – Church Boat

We had a little sacrament in our room and are now attending a Christian church in Ambon.
Waiting for it to start.

Snorkel Equipment worked great

Reefs were maybe 60% dead
Saw lots of sea turtles though
It was annoying though because at one location the turtles would try to surface to breathe and the tourists from other boats would swarm them if they were within swimming distance. Boat guys were tossing out bread to get the fish to come over too. Not much effort on their part to protect the long-term health of the reef over short-term happiness of the tourists
The crowds depended on the location. Some sites had more boats than others. The “turtle house” which had lots of turtles in fairly deep water had tons of snorkelers at the top and scuba divers at the bottom. But the turtle I saw up closest was at a quieter place in maybe 6ft of water. He was just nomming on stuff at the bottom and we didn’t seem to be bothering him at that distance.
The Gili islands were the most touristy place I’ve been to so far on this trip.
Australians mostly
